Is this like the gorilla girls, but for knitting?

It's a way to brighten up a city by putting splashes of color here and there. Lots of them show up on telephone poles and sign posts. Some knitters put them on trees, but I'm of the opinion that trees don't need to be tinkered with. :)

Basically, nondestructive public art. The word "knitfitti" is a good one to search. It's a clunky word, but you can find pictures that way.

I have a few friends in Norfolk, VA doing it. One knits, the other placing the pieces. The one stitching them in place says police don't even seem to care, or even notice.

I have a few pieces ready to go up. I'd like to have more than one person doing it, so we can put things up in lots of places at once, around town where they can be seen. I'm also (finally) learning two-color knitting, and getting ready to start some pieces honoring the femicide victims in Juarez, and calling for justice there.

Some pieces will stay up longer than others. If they look good, hopefully people will leave them be. The idea of letting go of the work and giving it to the whole town at once appeals to me, though (and taking lots of pictures, of course :).

Sounds interesting.  I don't have anything that could be put up, and to be honest I'm more interested in making things for my self and for my friends/family.  But I'd be willing to help you put stuff up and make some small things once I finish my current project.

Hey,

That sounds cool.
I just tinker with crochet really, haven't done much for a while - sewing is my main craft.
Out of interest, what kind of projects do you plan to put around?
I'm up for helping with public art!

Marvelous!

That makes three of us, so far.

I'm in favor of making things that aren't too fancy, with cheaper yarns, but colorful. I'm not an expert knitter, only an enthusiastic one.

A lot of what I've seen, and would like to imitate, is what looks like simple bands of knitting, done on big needles, stitched onto telephone poles. Mostly, it's not the kind of stuff you'd put a ton of time and sweat into, for each piece. Of course, that decision is up to the artist :)

I have only a few ideas beyond that. I think it works best as a group project, there are surely many things that could be done and haven't yet.

The group Knitta, and another called Hell's Knitters, have pictures posted.

http://www.knittaplease.com/

http://www.hellsknitters.com/

I'm going to start on something quick and purple today, to put on a telephone pole.

Any ideas for knitting/sewing/crocheting stuff that would make good guerilla art for Las Cruces? I will gladly help.
